In Kohlberg's model this is the highest stage of morality which occurs when a person has decided on her own life and how they want to live it; they have their own ethical behaviour that they consider acceptable and their own set of moral standards.
In most cases those standards that they have set for themselves align well with social acceptable standards however since this is an individual deciding on their own standards there can be clashes sometimes between what is social acceptable and that which an individual believes to be acceptable .
Even though conflict may arise most likely people will stick to their own personal beliefs.
