An train car of total mass of 13000 kg is pulling into a station and slowing down with an acceleration of -4.56 m/s^2. Before the train pulls into the station, a group of 7 stowaway jump off the train. Each stowaway has a mass of 66 kg. If the braking force on the train remains the same, what will be the acceleration of the train once the stowaways jump out of the train?

Answer:

[tex]-4.728 m/s^{2}[/tex]

Explanation:

F=ma where F is the force, m is the mass of object and a is acceleration

Initial mass is 13000 Kg

Final mass=1300-(66*7)=12538 Kg

[tex]F=m\times a=m_i \times a_i=m_f_\times a_f[/tex] where [tex]m_1[/tex] and [tex]m_f[/tex] are initial and final mass respectively, [tex]a_i[/tex] and [tex]a_f[/tex] are initial and final acceleration respectively

By substitution

[tex]13000\times -4.56=12538\times a_f[/tex]

[tex]a_f=-4.728026799\approx -4.728 m/s^{2}[/tex]
