Answer:
Christopher Columbus led the colonists across the Atlantic ocean where the Spanish expansion started. Spain and Portugal had a heated rivalry after Columbus had left. The two of them wanted the land and wanted to dominate this land. Around the 1480s, Pope Sixtus IV had granted Portugal the right to all land south of the Cape Verde islands. This power led the Portugal king to have all power "over Columbus." However, in 1493, Spanish-born Pope Alexander VI stated that claims of Spain were allowed over the Portugal king. This would mean that Spain would have this land over Portugal. Trying to keep some of the lands, King João II had to do something. This "something," was a negotiation of a treaty with Spain. This was the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494, which drew a north-to-south line through South America.
