During the Romanesque period, painted murals largely replaced mosaics on the walls of churches outside of Rome.

The Romanesque period started in mid-10th century CE and lasted until 12th century CE. It was centered in Europe and produced diverse regional styles. Primarily, it was an art and architectural style greatly inspired by the Classical Roman styles dating back to Antiquity and Byzantine periods.
