Earhart crossed the Atlantic Ocean alone for the first time in 1932, just two years after Charles Lindbergh.
After a nearly 15-hour trip, she made an emergency landing in the Gallagher family's farm in Ballyarnett, close to Derry. She had intended to land in Paris, but terrible weather and technical difficulties prevented her from doing so.
When she landed in Oakland, California in 1935, Amelia Earhart made aviation history as the first person to fly by themselves from Hawaii to the American mainland. Amelia accomplished two firsts on this flight: she was the first to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean and the first to fly solo over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
