Demosthenes was an Athenian statesman and is considered to be the greatest orator in ancient Greece. His "Philippics" was a series of speeches attacking Philip II of Macedonia as a threat to Greek independence. He urged the independent Greek city-states to unite in opposing Philip II. Although Athens and Thebes joined forces they were defeated by Philip in 338 B.C. Demosthenes continued to urge the Greek city-states to oppose Philip but they were again defeated in 323 B.C.
