The trans-Saharan gold and salt trade had large impact on the people living in West Africa. As this trade route was connecting the people on both sides of the Sahara desert, they were constantly exposed to new technology, culture, religion, ideas. One of the things that had a long lasting effect was the spreading of Islam. This religion came in West Africa from North Africa, through the gold and salt trade routes. The religion seemed appealing to some of the West African kingdoms, such as the largest of them all, the Songhai, so it was adopted. By adopting the Islam, the region started to gradually change, as the societies started to act in accordance to what the Koran was saying, thus having a long term impact on this part of Africa.

One of the significant long-term impacts of the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade was the spread of Islam to western African kingdoms such as Songhai.

Further Explanation:-

It was required by the traders to travel all across the Sahara in order to reach Sub-Saharan Africa for the trading of Gold and Salt. The peak of this trade was during the 8th century till the 17th century. There was a change of culture as well as a religion on this route as the colonies which came in the way of this route, adopted the languages and region of the country and most of them were absorbed in the Muslim world.

There were the majority of Christian Captives who used to live in these colonies as they were brought to Africa as Slaves and the majority of Christians among them converted to Islam and became part of the Muslim population. They converted to Muslim religion because during that time there were benefits of becoming part of the Muslim population.  These benefits were related to tax exemption and another reason behind this was that the Christians were brought to Africa as slaves, but under Muslim religion, it is against Muslim laws to keep a Muslim as a slave, So in a way to gain freedom, Christians converted themselves to Islam.
