A windowpane is 5 inches tall and the diagonal distance from one corner to the other is 10 inches. How wide is the windowpane? If necessary, round to the nearest tenth.

8.7 inches.
10^2-5^2=a^2.
100-25=a^2
75=a^2
The sq root of 75 is about 8.7
The windowpane is 8.7 inches wide.

Imagine this as a triangle. You have the rectangle (window) and you have one side which is 5 inches, then its 10 inches across so thats the hypotenuse. 

a^2+b^2=c^2 

so if we apply a = 5 and c=10 
c^2 - b^2 = a^2

I got 8.6 but that doesn't seem right, Im stuck on this too
