The main goal of the american revolution was to gain independence from Great Britain, since the American colonists felt that their personal liberties were being "trampled" upon by the British.

At the beginning American people aimed to remain British citizens, but they also desired to achieve the self-rule. However, King George disagreed and pushed them into the revolution which resulted in the Independence Declaration, thus the colonist gained the so expected self-rule.
