In addition to the corona, the chromosphere is also visible. You can see little prominences in H-alpha (red) light peeping out from the edge of the moon, but this usually requires binoculars or a telescope to see and is dangerous to view without knowing what you're doing because it's so close to the bright part of the sun that when the rest of the sun peeks out you can blind yourself if you're looking through an unfiltered telescope.
