There are various ways in which O. Henry shows that Della and Jim do not have a lot of money. We learn that the couple lives in a small apartment with rented furniture. The description of the apartment is far from fancy. Moreover, we learn that Della watches her expenses very carefully, and that the couple struggles to save money. Finally, we also learn that, even after great effort, they are unable to afford the gifts that they wanted to buy.

The main highlights of the story was where both the characters give up their things for each other. This shows that to make the other happy one can sacrifices their things.

The author discuss some evidences where it shows that Della and Jim have not that much money when Della argues with grocer and forces to negotiate on the price.

She  saves single penny she got and calculate expenses to manage the amount for gift which she want to present her husband, shows her financial crisis.
